Artist Collaborations

For this presentation at Frieze New York 2025, THE WHOO brings together three emerging South Korean artists who embody ways that traditional craft practices, which reached their apogee in palace culture, can inspire contemporary making.

Jian Yoo
Jian Yoo

Using intricate mother-of-pearl inlay, Jian Yoo’s specially commissioned caskets are a singular statement of THE WHOO’s ethos, representing the enduring touch point between beauty and functionality.

Ok Kim
Ok Kim

In sculpture and wall-based works, Ok Kim builds up mulberry-sap lacquer in multiple delicate layers. Her practice invests the classic ott-chil technique with a contemporary vibrancy through bold dynamic shapes and colours, while observing its commitment to balance and peaceful reflection.

Subin Seol
Subin Seol

Subin Seol’s practice builds on the legacy of Korean ceramics, drawing inspiration from traditional kiln forms and elegant handcrafted detail. Her timeless designs, rendered in greens and earth tones, echo the widely admired Korean tradition of celadon ware as well as the hues found in palace aesthetics.

Each artist entwines past and present in a contemporary expression of craft. Using time-honoured methods, they preserve Korean heritage whilst finding languages to invigorate these mediums’ continued relevance today.
